How to Dispose of a Treadmill – Easy & Eco-Friendly Solutions
Recycling a treadmill can be a very challenging process. If you’re recycling it or following local disposal rules, here’s how to do it.
I came across this when I decided to improve my home gym with a new model of NordicTrack treadmill. My old machine which used to be my reliable companion had now become a clumsy, bulky nuisance.
It was not possible to discard it like any other waste product. The disposing process seemed very complicated.
If you are in the same boat, then you do not need to worry anymore. It is possible to recycle your treadmill, take it to a dump, or use special programs for its disposal.
It will allow you to do this responsibly and without wasting time.
Can You Throw Away a Treadmill?
The first question I asked myself was, “Can you throw away a treadmill?” The short answer is: It is not easy. A treadmill isn’t like regular household waste, it’s classified as bulky waste.
My initial thing was to just throw it in the garbage because it was too big and unappealing to the eyes. After a quick search online, I discovered that most waste management services won’t pick up bulky items without prior arrangement.
I did not want to contravene any disposal laws in the region or pay any fines. This made me look for other ways of disposing of the wastes that were friendly to the environment.
Some cities do have certain days for pick-up of these items. You have to arrange for a pick-up in advance. [1]
Can I Take a Treadmill to the Dump?
Another idea that came to my mind was to take the treadmill to the nearest garbage disposal. It was not far-fetched to imagine that ‘Can I take a treadmill to the dump?’
This was for me but it was not as easy as taking the treadmill in the car and delivering it.
There are limitations on what can go into a landfill especially electronics and machinery in my area. Treadmills have electrical parts that cannot be disposed of in a normal dump.
I tried to find what to do with the treadmill by calling my local dump. They said they would take it but for a fee and I had to ensure that the treadmill was disassembled.
For those who don’t mind a DIY approach to disassembling the treadmill, it could be a viable option. But for people like me, who lack mechanical skills, it can be quite challenging.

How to Dispose of a Treadmill in NYC
In New York, if you want to dispose of a treadmill, it may not be as simple an affair as people from rural areas would think. I don’t live in New York but friends who are residents of the city informed me about their experiences.
I was curious to know how to dispose of a treadmill in NYC. It is not easy going because of the limited space. You cannot easily load the treadmill on a car and dispose of it like in some other regions.
In New York City, there is a certain way through which one has to dispose of big items such as treadmills. First, you have to arrange a pickup in large quantities via the NYC Department of Sanitation.
They permit residents to dump up to six bulky items at the same time. If the treadmill has any electronic parts, they need to be disposed of through an electronic waste program, not left on the sidewalk.
My friend preferred to call a junk removal service that comes in and does the lifting. It breaks down the equipment for you but they charge an amount for their services.
How to Dispose of a Treadmill in the UK
In the UK the process differs slightly. There, many local councils provide bulky waste collection services. Some councils pick up and take away bulky items for free while others charge for that service.
As is always the case, it would be wise to consult your local government. The other way of disposing of the treadmill in the UK is by actually taking it to a recycling center.
These centers accept large household items but you will have to take the treadmill there on your own. However, many private companies exist to recycle and dispose of fitness equipment.
How to Recycle an Old Treadmill
Recycling was the choice I had to make for my old treadmill. It is quite easy to recycle an old treadmill but this needs some information.
Many recycling centers accept fitness equipment. But you need to disassemble the treadmill into individual recyclable components first.
The treadmill parts that need recycling are the metal frame, plastic components, and electrical parts. Most recycling centers will only take the treadmill apart from you which can be very tiresome.
This was a step I wasn’t prepared for, so I chose to call an e-waste recycling service in the local area. It can help me dismantle it.
If you are strong enough to disassemble it on your own, then you can do that. Then take the different parts to the various recycling centers. [2]
